GET OUT AND GO! LOCAL ADVENTURE CLUB

Join us each month as we venture out to take advantage of the local sights and activities! Participants must provide their own transportation to each location. Look for directions and more details in the Senior Connection newsletter each month. Cost varies by activity. Please register in advance. We’re headed to the Iron City! Sloss Furnaces produced iron for nearly 90 years, which gave rise to the city of Birmingham, AL. Now recognized as a National Historic Landmark, Sloss Furnaces with its web of pipes and tall smokestacks offers us a glimpse into the great industrial past of the South and our nation. Tackle all your holiday shopping as we venture to The Outlet Shops of Grand River with more than 150 stores and is the largest enclosed shopping center in Alabama. Stores include Levi’s, Kate Spade, Coach, American Eagle, Loft, Nike, Michael Kors and Fragrance Outlet among many more! The cost of the trip includes transportation to the mall. JANUARY 14TH ALABAMA SPORTS HALL OF FAME TOUR, BIRMINGHAM, AL

The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Museum is located in the Uptown District of Birmingham and is attached to Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. The three-story 33,000 square-foot museum was opened in 1992 and is home to over 6,000 pieces of sports memorabilia, The ASHOF museum is one of the largest sports halls of fame in the nation with memorabilia from each inductee, dating back to the first induction class of 1969, displayed through the facility. FEBRUARY 9TH NEGRO SOUTHERN LEAGUE MUSEUM TOUR, BIRMINGHAM, AL

The Negro Southern League was created in 1920 by a group of African American businessmen and baseball enthusiasts. From 1920 until its demise in 1951, the Negro Southern League served as a feeder route for many great black players to go on to the Negro American League and Negro National League. The mission of the Negro Southern League Museum is to present the history of African-American baseball in an unsurpassed manner by maintaining a world-class facility that recognized the League’s impact on Birmingham, Alabama and the world of professional baseball. This understanding, along with the acknowledgment of the players’ ability to inspire people of all races and transcend barriers, establishes a for the Museum to evoke a broad-sense of community and create unparalleled cultural and educational experiences that acknowledge the past, embrace the present, and frame the future.
